OUR NOTEWORTHY CHANUKAH PROGRAM

This year's Chanukah program was one worth remembering, as we collaborated with the staff, students, and parents of the Midtown Shule in Manhattan to celebrate the holiday together. The celebrations, which took place at the Bellmore Theater on Long Island, attracted the attention of the Forward, which published this article.

Bar Mitzvah CD

BAR/BAS MITZVAH PREPARATION ALBUM Our Blended Ceremony Bar/Bas Mitzvah program has become very popular, with many of our students learning traditional Torah and Haftorah portions as part of their Cultural ceremony. To aid in our students' endeavors, Scott Eckers has released an album, It's Your Bar Mitzvah! The Torah Service: Traditional, sixteen tracks from the central part of the Saturday morning service. It is available on many Internet sites, inlcuding iTunes Store.

Olive Oil Workshop

LET'S MAKE OUR OWN OIL FOR CHANUKAH!

Our students participated in a wonderful Chanukah Oil Workshop through Jewish Learning Experience. Not only did our students (and parents!) get to learn about the process, we got very dirty in the process smashing olives. Hands-on activities are always a part of the shule experience in East Meadow.

GRADUATE BOYS A 'CLASS' ACT!
As featured on Jewish World Watch...

Darfur Presentation"Workmen's Circle of Life"
Eric Ravens, Ethan Barkin, Stephen Rossman, Jeremy Roller, Harrison Price, and Dylan Davis.

As six of the students from I.L. Peretz Jewish School of Nassau were preparing for their cultural B'nai Mitzvah, they took it upon themselves to educate their shul about what is happening in Darfur. Eric Ravens, Ethan Barkin, Stephen Rossman, Jeremy Roller, Harrison Price, and Dylan Davis spoke with their community in East Meadow, NY, inspiring them to get involved in JWW's mission, and helping provide refugee families with solar cookers.

Graduates Accepting Awards Congratulations to our Graduate Class of 2008-2009! The Graduate boys received certificates of appreciation from Jewish World Watch for their efforts with the Solar Cooker Program. Ann Toback, the executive director of National Workmen's Circle, came to the program to present special certificates to the graduates as well. They boys were recognized for their commitment to social action and community service both locally and across the globe. They were described as "models" for the entire WC organization nation-wide. A real honor. To date, the boys have raised awareness and enough money to send 20 cookers to Darfur. After the Chanukah program, they will be sending another 8 cookers to Darfur this week. INCREDIBLE! The boys displayed a real solar cooker and passed out certificates to the students who wanted to learn more about Darfur.

FOR THE GREATER GOOD...

CHANUKAH TOY DRIVE:
Thank you to everyone who participated in this event. The box was overflowing with wonderful toys, crafts, videos, games, and activities for Max and Jake. Rachel picked up the box and was prepared to deliver the goodies to the family. What a great Chanukah they will have this year.

PASSOVER "GOODY BASKET" FUND RAISER:
This basket is ready to accept donations of Passover related items. We will raffle off the basket at the Passover Seder. All proceeds will go to benefit the Sunrise Day Camp. This is a camp dedicated to children with cancer and their siblings. The basket will be at the end of the upstairs hallway. Some information about the Day Camp will be posted next to the basket.

rockCANroll:
The bin is ready to accept food donations. Each class has been given some suggestions, however, all non-perishable foot items are accepted. The bin is located at the end of the upstairs hallway. Each month, a different class will have the opportunity to count the number of food items donated. Then we will calculate and keep a running tab.

When we return in January, the students in the Primary, Alef, Beys and Gimel classes will be getting tote bags with the rockCANroll logo. They will be designing the flip side of the bag in order to personalize it. These bags can be used as their shule tote bags. They will remind the students to bring a food item to the bin and help to end hunger in Long Island.

BIGGEST (Pre-)CHANUKAH ASSEMBLY IN YEARS... Chanukah Pictures

December 14: WOW! That was an awesome program. We had an amazingly large turnout. The Daled class did an incredible job "hosting" the program. Shule students and their families came together to celebrate the Festival of Lights. Students learned Chanukah blessings, songs, and stories, got to light the candles, spin dreidels, and eat latkes! Click here for pictures. In other news...

ARTWORK:
The Alef and Beys class prepared for the program by drawing beautiful pictures about the Ale Brider song. They wrote Yiddish letters and decorated the downstairs hallway. The Alef class created the beautiful, giant menorah with glowing candles that decorated the wall above the stage. They also made the picture with dreidels, stars and latkes. The Beys class worked tirelessly to create two giant "Trees of Life." They were practicing the song "Eytz Chayim" and were motivated to create these beautiful pieces of artwork.

MUSIC: All of the classes performed beautifully. The Primary class played percussion for the Ladino song Ocho Kandelikas. Hannah, from the Alef class, played percussion throughout today's program. The Gimel class sang the song Ale Brider and the following soloists really did a great job: Ruthie, Becky, Alex, Jake and David. Today's instrumentalists were Jake Levy on electric guitar, Dylan Davis on electric acoustic guitar, and Jeremy Roller on the violin.
