Shule - Jewish School Program
שולע - ייִדישע שול פּראָגראַם

Our basic shule program is for children from ages six through thirteen. We meet from September through May on Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoons.

אונדזער סתּמע שולע פּראָגראַם איז פֿאַר קינדער פֿון זעקס ביז דרײַצן יאָר אַלט. מיר באַגעגענען פֿון סעפּטעמבער ביז מײ זונטיקן אין דער פֿרי און מיטװאָכן נאָכמיטאָג.י

The Primary program (Wednesdays only) is for children in first and second grades. Children may begin in either grade for a one- or two-year program. The Primary class learns about music and culture. In music, the children are taught Jewish folk songs, songs from the immigrant and worker experience in America, and songs of peace and justice. Elly Wortman heads the classroom component and teaches the students about Jewish holidays and history.

The Alef class is the first in a four-year sequence of classroom instruction that leads to graduation from our regular program. In Alef, students learn the Hebrew (Yiddish) alphabet from Scott Eckers' Modern Yiddish for Children book and learn to put letters together to form basic Yiddish words. Children learn to read and write elementary Yiddish according to YIVO standards; they also learn basic phrases and sayings. Students continue to learn Jewish music and culture with Deborah Strauss, Jackie Spiegel, and David Goldstein and begin to take on roles in our holiday celebrations (see below).

The Beyz class is the second year of formal instruction. Students continue to learn basic Yiddish reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Classes are conducted in both Yiddish and English and students use the WC/AR Yidishe Kinder - Alef textbook. More connections between language, music, and culture are made.

די בית קלאַס איז דאָס צװײטע יאָר אינסטרוקציע. תּלמידים בלײַבן לערנען ייִדיש לײענען, שרײַבן, רעדן, און הערן. קלאַסן זײַנען געפֿירט אױף בײדע ייִדיש און ענגליש און תּלמידים ניצן דאָס ייִדישע קינדער - א לערנבוך פֿונעם אַרבעטער-רינג. מער פֿאַרבינדונגען זײַנען געמאַכט צװישן שפּראַך, מוזיק, און קולטור.ו

The Gimel class is the third year of formal instruction and the beginning of more intense study of Judaism in its many facets. In studying language, students use the WC/AR Yidishe Kinder - Beyz book in addition to supplemental resources. Verb forms are taught in both present and past tenses and students are exposed to more vocabulary. Students begin to learn how to read Hebrew and use HaSefer Alef Beys in addition to teacher-prepared materials. In history and culture class, students utilize The Torah and You and readings from famous Jewish writers under David Goldstein and Melanie Glatman. Students learn how to read Hebrew in Gimel and apply this during holiday celebrations. They gain deeper insight regarding Jewish holidays, rituals, and life cycle events. The Daled class continues these lessons.

די גימל קלאַס איז דאָס דריטע יאָר אינסטרוקציע און דער אָנהײב פֿון מער אָנגעשטרענגט שטודירן װעגן ייִדישקײט אין זײַנע פֿילע אַנזיכטן/מײנונגען. צו לערנען זיך שפּראַך, תּלמידים ניצן דאָס ייִדישע קינדער - ב לערנבוך פֿונעם אַרבעטער-רינג און װײַטערדיקע מיטלען. װערב פֿאָרמען זײַנען געלערנט אין בײדע עבֿר און איציקע צײַטן און תּלמידים לערנען זיך מער װאָקאַבולאַר. אין געשיכטע און קולטור קלאַס, תּלמידים ניצן די תּורה און דיך און לייענענונגען פֿון באַרימטע שרײַבערס אונטער דָוִד גאָלדשטײן און מעלאַני גלאַטמאַן. תּלמידים לערנען זיך לײענען העברעיש אין גימל און דלת און צולײגן װאָס זײ האָבן זיך געלערנט בײַ אונדזערע יום-טובֿ פֿאַרזאַמלונגען.ו 

The Daled class continues to build on our curriculum. Students expand their knowledge of both the Yiddish and Hebrew languages through higher-level conversation and literacy. They begin a more in-depth study of Jewish history, including the Holocaust, our connection to Israel (both past and present), holiday traditions, Jewish culture, and music. Students learn the important Jewish principles of asking questions, giving tsedakah, and upholding Jewish values.

The Hey class is the last year of formal instruction at our shule and culminates in a Bar/Bas Mitzvah ceremony. Hey students may choose to have a "cultural" Bar/Bas Mitzvah and prepare a paper or speech and meaningful project under the direction of our teachers. Others choose to have a traditional Bar/Bas Mitzvah at a local synagogue. Many students choose to "blend" their ceremonies by incorporating elements of both cultural and traditional ceremonies. A unique feature of our school is the ability for each individual family to personalize this important milestone in their child's life. Although we are a secular Jewish school, we do also encourage participation in traditional Jewish endeavors. This is reflected in our holiday celebrations, which we feel are important in order to maintain Jewish identity.

Holiday Celebrations
יום-טובֿ שׂימחות

We believe that celebrating Jewish holidays is central to our role in educating the next generation of Jews. We encourage families and friends to join us several times a year as we celebrate the holidays in style! Most of our assemblies take place on Sunday mornings from 10:00 to 12:00. חַנוּכַּה פֿאַרזאַמלונג This year's Chanukah Assembly was a wonderful experience. Students led sections of our program in song and recitation and showed off the large amount of information they learned this fall. Traditional and modern songs in Hebrew, Yiddish, and English made the Festival of Lights even more festive after the Chanukiah was lit and before the latkes were served. Students were treated to story telling, professional klezmer entertainment, and special gifts!

פֶּסַח סֵדֶר Our Passover model seder is the highlight of each spring. Students learn the basic elements of the Passover seder and participate in our communal meal. Grandparents love to hear their eyniklekh recite the fir kashes in Yiddish. Traditional Passover songs and modern songs of freedom abound in our assembly hall. Families can use our materials as part of their home celebrations.

פּוּרִים שפּיל One of the funniest events of the winter is the Purim Carnival. Students create games and perform a skit (purim-shpil). Of course, costumes are worn, graggers are spun, and hamentashen are eaten by the dozen. Is there a holiday celebration at which we don't eat?

יָמִים נוֹרָאִים On the High Holidays, your family can join us for an alternative service led by Deborah Strauss. This service emphasizes tradition and song in the spirit of the holy days. For Sukkos, make sure to check out our sukkah and see the yearly show that passes through our booths.

Other events, such as outings to the park, community fundraising, public service functions, and programs with other Workmen's Circle/Arbeter Ring schools take place throughout the year.
